Positive Masculinities
Engaging Men and Boys for Gender Equality
A community-based initiative in partnership with UN Women to transform patriarchal norms by engaging men and boys as allies in caregiving, gender equality, and shared responsibility within families and communities.
By engaging entire families and communities, the program supports:
Greater male participation in caregiving and household responsibilities
More supportive environments for girls’ education and leadership
Shifts in attitudes around gender roles and masculinity
Stronger foundations for long-term gender equality
Through DAREtoCARE, Project Soar is contributing to a cultural shift in which gender equity is a shared social responsibility.
Hear from our Community Animators:
Why?
Across Morocco, women and girls continue to carry a disproportionate share of unpaid care and domestic work. This imbalance limits girls’ educational opportunities and women’s economic participation, while entrenching gender roles that confine care to women and girls and leave little room for alternative models of masculinity. Lasting gender equality cannot be achieved without addressing the everyday norms and expectations that sustain these inequalities.
How?
We work with men and boys in the Loudaya province, Marrakech-Safi region, to challenge restrictive gender roles and promote care, responsibility, and equity as shared social values. Developed in partnership with UN Women and grounded in the DAREtoCARE model, unpaid care work is used as an entry point to open honest conversations about masculinity and shared roles within the household. Through this process, men and boys are positioned as essential allies in creating more just, supportive, and equitable environments.
The program, titled “The Home is Everyone’s Responsibility”, is community-led and experiential. Local community animators work with families in small clusters, creating space for dialogue, reflection, and change rooted in everyday life.
