RED BLOSSOMING

A photo exhibition by Fatimazohra Serri, In collaboration with Project Soar and with the support of the Embassy of Switzerland in Morocco

Red Blossoming is a visual meditation on menstruation as both a natural cycle and a lived reality shaped by silence, stigma, and inequality. Through the symbolic use of red roses—beautiful, delicate, and thorned—the photographer explores the tension between vulnerability and resilience, invisibility and empowerment, pain and pride. Each image invites the viewer to confront what has long been hidden: the reality that for millions of girls and women, managing their period is a monthly struggle marked by shame, exclusion, and economic hardship.

Globally, nearly 500 million people lack access to adequate menstrual products , and 1 in 10 girls in low- and middle-income countries are unable to attend school during menstruation due to the lack of supplies, sanitation, and education. In Morocco, 22% of girls miss school during their periods, increasing their risk of falling behind, dropping out, or being pushed into early marriage. Meanwhile, menstrual products are taxed as luxury items in many countries, consuming up to 10% of a low-income family’s monthly income. On an environmental level, the widespread use of disposables contributes to a growing crisis, with 45 billion products discarded annually, generating over 200,000 tonnes of waste that can take centuries to decompose.

Red Blossoming calls for visibility, dignity, and equity—for every girl and woman in Morocco and everywhere.
